Contratto Aperitif, Italy
This Aperitif is still made from the original recipe that dates back to 1933 and is based on a mixture of 24 delicately infused premium natural herbs, spices, roots and seeds combined with Italian Brandy!
This winery has a along, fascinating history. It was established in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto, making Contratto one of the oldest producers of sparkling wine in Italy. The 1919 Contratto ("Metodo Classico") Extra Brut was the first vintage of sparkling wine made ever in the country.
The wines from Contratto have traveled all over the world - mostly to royal houses. Contratto was even the personal supplier to the Vatican as well as to the Italian Royal Family.Making wine for over 150 years, they became producers of Moscato and red wines to Spumante Metodo Classico, still white wines, as well as Vermouth, tonic, and syrups.
Along with being one of the oldest producers of sparkling wines, Contratto also has the oldest wine cellar's today- everything from vintage champagne to new sparkling wines... even wines where the vintage is unknown! The cathedral cellars (now designated a UNESCO Heritage Site) are very beautiful quite the historical treasure (see pictures here).
For many generations the winery remained in the Contratto family, but in 1993 it was sold to Carlo Bocchino. He owned Canelli's grappa distillery at the time. He still pursues the quality and shares the Contratto family history to all visitors.
We are excited to put the Aperitif on our shelves with only 13.5% alcohol. It is made with 100% natural ingredients. You can drink it alone, mix it with soda, sparkling wine, or with refreshing lemons.
